Temples of Nadia

Introduction

NADIA district is of 3927 sq. km. , situated between Long . 88°09' and 88°48 ' and Lat. 23°53 ' and 24°11'. It is bounded by river Bhagirathi (Hooghly & Burdwan districts) in the west , on north Murshidabad district , in the east Bangladesh and on the south 24-Parganas.

Main rivers are BHAGIRATHI, JALANGI, CHURNI, ICCHAMATI, generally flows from North to South. The district is generally plain and fartile without any mentionable industry. Agriculture being the main source of income.

Char-chala temples are more prevelent. Richly decorated temples are very few. Teracotta sculpture in the district lacks the vigour of BISHNUPUR - BIRBHUM art and sublimity is less in comparison to HOOGHLY- BURDWAN sculpture.

The oldest dated teracotta temple in the district is Rudreswar Siva at MATIARI ( map ref. 10 ) build in 1665 and latest is at MAYAPUR (Map ref : 11), a temple build by ISKCON in mid 20th Century.


Total no. of monuments documented are 47 in number. Number of negatives exposed are 1055 in numbers.
