Temples of Burdwan

Introduction

The district of BURDWAN is situated in between Lat. 22°55' to 23°52' and Long. 86°45' to 88°24'. In the west touches Bihar state in its narrow-west border bounded by river Barakar. In the north Ajoy river separates with Birbhum district. In south Damodar river flows forming border with Bankura district. In the east the district is bounded by Bhagirathi and borders Murshidabad, Nadia & Hooghly forms the border.

River flows from west to east except Bhagirathi. The topography of the western side is undwalating in nature and less fertile but have mineral deposits and industrial complexes. Eastern part is very fertile and we have more monuments. The district is some 2705 Sq. miles in area and have 2703 numbers of villages. District town is Burdwan.

One of the pre-Muslim monuments is in existance (Map Ref. 50 ) is of Deul type. This Index comprises of 702 monuments of which 409 are of Terracotta Decorated. 19 Nos. monuments are built of Stone and 274 Nos. are undecorated. Most of the temples are of Brick built.
