Temples of Purulia

Introduction

The PURULIA DISTRICT is situated in the Western Higher part of West Bengal. From here CHOTANAGPUR Platte slopes down to Bhagirathi river. The district is situated in between Lat 22°40’ to 23°40’ and Long 85°50’ to 86°55’, area covered is 6259 sq km. The district is generally sloped from west to east. Some isolated hills are there in the northern side. Singbhum Hill ranges cover the West, Southwest and South side. River DAMODAR covers the Northern tip of the district forming PANCHET DAM. River SUBARNAREKHA covers the Western Border. River KANGSABATI flows through the middle of the district to Bankura & Midnapur. River KUMARI flows through the Southern end and joins to KANGSABATI in Bankura. The district is predominantly agricultural in nature. Hill ranges in South & West are with forest produce.

There are 8 Deuls, of which 3 are of stone construction and rest are of BRICK dating pre-Muslim period. Four temples are with TERRACOTTA decorations. There is one DATED temple (1697 A. D.), Radhabinode of CHALIAMA.
Some 15 Nos of monuments have been recorded in this list spread over some 9 locations.
