Temples of Howrah

Introduction

The HOWRAH DISTRICT is situated in the lower part of BENGAL in between Lat 22° 12' to 22° 46' and Long. 88° 21´ to 88° 51', comprising an area of 561 sq. miles. Bhagirathi river forms the eastern border. The southern land mass is tapered down to a point called Gadiara bounded by the two rivers - namely Bhagirathi and Rupnarayan. In the west , of the district is partly covered by Rupnarayan river and rest by the Midnapur district. In the north lies the Hooghly district. The land is sloped from north to south and many rivers flow through the district and some are also navigable. The area is predominantly rural in character and only some parts of east is Urbanised. Railway line crossed the district from east to west.

There is one dated (1384 A. D.) Maninath Temple at Garh Bhawanipur and another (1666 A.D.) at Sultanpur known as Khatiyal Siva Temple. Both have terracotta decorations.


Some 64 monuments have been recorded in this list spread over some 42 locations.
