Temples of Birbhum

Introduction

The District of BIRBHUM is situated between Lat. 23°30' to 24°45' and Long. 87°10' to 88°0' on touching Bihar state. It is bounded in South by Ajoy river dividing Birbhum & Burdwan Districts. Its Eastern boundary is partly covered with Burdwan District in South-East end and the rest with Murshidabad District. Northern part narrows slowly and touches Bihar state at the end.

Two principal rivers flow from west to east namely Ajoy and Mayurakshi. Its entire western side is of undwelating topography and at places met without crop of huge boulders. Southern side is more fertile. It is of some 1743 square miles in area, have 2211 villages. District town is Suri could be reached by Rail and Road accross Ajoy river. This area received the Jaina and Buddistic influences earlier ending with Pal and Sen periods.

Islamic & European influences are visible in monuments as also in art and decoration. Terracotta decorated oldest temple is at Ghurisa (Map Ref. dates back 1633 A.D). This INDEX comprises of 463 monuments of which some 60 nos. are Terracotta decorated. 70 monuments are decorated with fine red stone sculptures. Some 327 numbers are undecorated. Most of the monuments are of Brick built barring a few.
